Calcasieu Parish Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy holds 105th graduation

According to Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso, the Calcasieu Parish Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy completed its 105th Basic Academy by conducting graduation ceremonies on June 19 for 26 officers representing 8 agencies in the five-parish area.

For one, many new, exotic palm species and varieties are more readily available; however, our cold temperatures the past couple of winters have damaged some of the species, and people are searching for the most reliable palms for landscape use.

Rice Station field day set for June 26 in Crowley

The LSU AgCenter Rice Research Station Field Day on June 26 will feature the latest in research tailored at helping Louisiana rice farmers.

“Our program features a well-rounded slate of presentations, including entomology, variety and hybrid development, disease and weed control, and agronomy,” said Steve Linscombe, station director. “We also will have visiting professors from Mississippi and Arkansas.”

Linscombe said the field day typically draws rice industry leaders from other states and abroad.

Many popular herbs languish in the heat of summer, and some down right pitch a fit. Herbs that do not like our hot, wet summers include thyme, chives, sage, parsley, cilantro, French tarragon, lavender, feverfew and chamomile.

Fortunately, a number of herbs tolerate, or even prefer, the torrid weather of a Louisiana summer. Some of them even make great substitutes for some of the less heat-tolerant herbs.
